If you are an atheist or agnostic (like me), you don't pray to any god even if you are in a lot of trouble. Atheists don't believe in God. That's all there is to it. They live their lives as though there is nobody watching over them. Many of them have no desire to be watched over, no matter how good-natured the "Big Brother" figure might be. Some atheists would like to be able to believe in God -- but so what? Should one believe things merely because one wants them to be true? The risks of such an approach should be obvious. Atheists often decide that wanting to believe something is not enough; there must be evidence for the belief. Regarding your question: There are many ways of obtaining comfort: Your family and friends Pets Food and drink Music, television, literature, arts and entertainment Sports or exercise Meditation Psychotherapy Drugs Work That may sound like rather an empty and vulnerable way to face danger, but so what? Should individuals believe in things because they are comforting, or should they face reality no matter how harsh it might be? In the end, it's a decision for the individual concerned. Most atheists are unable to believe something they would not otherwise believe merely because it makes them feel comfortable. They put truth before comfort, and consider that if searching for truth sometimes makes them feel unhappy, that's just hard luck. Often truth hurts. posted by: everton79 (reply) post date: 12.19.04 (3:53 am) I believe in God too.. and I believe everyone who surrenders to Him, regardless of which religion.. will return to Him. I guess it's devotion in doing things for God rather than for the self. I have a friend who.. is well.. sorta has one foot in atheism and another in religion.. And the thing about him is that he doesn't really tend to think about God when life is going his way.. and he had never thought about being thankful for what he has been bestowed.. but when something bad befalls him.. well.. he kinda likes to blame it on God..I don't consider that as answering your questions.. but i guess it's just another perspective to look at.. I guess many people often tend to think of God only when they're in need.. which maybe kinda sad when you come to think of it.. because if we were to put our humble selves in His position.. well.. I wouldnt really like friends who just come to me when they need me.. (even though i'd probably still help 'em anyway) But i guess.. if we're talking about the One who created us.. and all that that surrounds us and keeps us happy.. well it just sounds a bit.. ungrateful. But I guess we wouldn't know God's intentions.. for sure He may be a lot more forgiving than petty humans.. but I dont think we should take it for granted.. My goodness.. this comment is going too long already.. erm.. sorry.. haha.. but wish you good luck in finding your answers! posted by: Anastacia (reply) post date: 12.19.04 (11:03 pm) Great post! Im going to enjoy reading the responses you get, though I cant answer for you :p posted by: luscious (reply) post date: 12.19.04 (11:26 pm) this one of the great post that i have read, i believe in God, but i'm not that religious, i prefer praying/talking to God in my own room . God Bless You! posted by: JT (reply) post date: 12.22.04 (6:39 am) I'm Jewish and I do believe in G-d, but I don't spend a lot of time trying to define Him (except when my son asks theological questions). I don't tend to "blame" G-d but I have definitely called upon Him in times of distress, anxiety, or gratitude. I was never really observant (raised Reform, almost intermarried 15 yrs ago), but I think having kids made me more spiritual. Interesting blog! |
